Athletes hit Iran’s best results in Universiade

GWANGJU, Jul. 13 (MNA) – With 15 medals clinched at the 28th edition of Universiade in South Korea’s Gwangju, Iran has demonstrated its best performance compared to previous years.

With only one day left to the end of the 28th edition of Universiade which opened in Gwangju on July 3, Iranian athletes put a spectacular performance on display and managed to improve their ranking to the 8th place in the medal distribution table (7 gold, 2 silver, 6 bronze.)

The following are the names of the athletes who claimed medals for Iran in 2015 Universiade competitions:

Gold medal:

Najmeh Khedmati (shooting), Mahlagha Jambozorg (shooting), Armin Hadipour (taekwondo), Ahmad Khosrowfar (taekwondo), Saeid Rajabi (taekwondo), Omid Amidi (taekwondo) and Akram Khodabandeh (taekwondo).

Silver medal:

Mehdi Jamali (poomsae), Najmeh Khdemati, Mahlagha Jambozorg and Maryam Talebi (shooting team)

Bronze medal:

Najmeh Khedmati (shooting), Khdemati, Mahlagha Jambozorg and Maryam Talebi (shooting team), Khdemati, Jambozorg and Aminzadeh (shooting team), Mehran Askari (taekwondo), Javad Amiri (taekwondo), Bahareh Ghaderian, Fatemeh Ghasemi and Marjan Salahshour (poomsae team).

South Korea leads the standings with 94 medals (41 golds). Russia is in the second place with 109 medals, among them 31 golds. Chinese athletes rank third, having won 31 golds and 64 medals in total.

The Islamic Republic of Iran’s Universiade team was awarded a total of 9 medals – 2 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronzes – at the 2014 Summer Universiade in Russian city of Kazan, and stood in the 32nd place of the tournament.

The Universiade, second to the Olympic Games, is an international sporting and cultural festival which is staged every two years in a different city.

The 28th edition of Universiade opened in Gwangju on July 3, and will wrap up on July 14.
